Perth Golf Guide

Given that our current cover star Hannah Green is a Western Australian local, it made perfect sense to share a selection of Perth’s best golf courses with you. Yes, we’re aware there are plenty of other golfing gems in the west to include, which simply means we'll have to head over to review more soon.

Few golf courses anywhere in the world offer the dramatic contrasts, the scenic beauty and the sheer golfing challenge of Joondalup Country Club’s 27-hole championship golf course.

Designed by the internationally renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr, Joondalup Resort golf course presents a tough, uncompromising lay-out, featuring a great variation in setting and style.

The spectacular Joondalup golf course sweeps across dense bushland, cuts through steep limestone quarries and skirts picturesque lakes, to present surprises and challenges at almost every turn.

It is a course that captures the golfer’s imagination. One minute you are playing an approach shot beneath a 30-metre limestone cliff and the next you are adapting to the fresh ocean breeze on an undulating links-style fairway.

Sea View Golf Club

Sea View Golf Club is the third oldest golf course in Western Australia, having opened in 1909.  Located in the picturesque beachside suburb of Cottesloe with wide stunning views of the Indian Ocean, Sea View is a true links “A” grade championship nine-hole repeating course.

It has been designed to test the skills of all playing levels but is also renowned for its playability. Sea View is a private members’ club; however, non-members are always welcome to enjoy the course and the hospitality.

Maylands Peninsula Golf Course

Just 10 minutes from Perth City, Maylands Golf Course is set on the banks of the Swan River. This 18-hole, par 71 golf course is one of the most picturesque in Western Australia and is known to be quite challenging. There are plenty of practice facilities on hand too including, 2 x putting greens, a chipping green, a bunker and a straight, well-marked out-driving range.

Mt Lawley Golf Club

Mount Lawley Golf Club is one of Western Australia’s premier sporting clubs, boasting a championship golf course and outstanding facilities. Our cover star, Hannah Green, is a member here. It is a private golf course; however, members of reciprocal clubs are welcomed, and limited opportunities are available for visitors who wish to play at Mount Lawley.

Note: In the Scottish tradition, each of the holes is named and it is a part of the club’s culture to refer to holes by name rather than number. The club’s signature hole is Commonwealth, a short downhill par three with a green shaped like Australia.

Lake Karrinyup Country Club

Widely acknowledged as Western Australia’s premier golf club, Lake Karrinyup is a tranquil botanical haven for wildlife. Lake Karrinyup Country Club features a world-class 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole short course with stunning views in every direction.

The North Course is a fabulous feature of Lake Karrinyup Country Club, providing a challenging layout to hone a player’s short game. Measuring approx.1700m (depending on which set of tees are being used) and a par of 31, the North Course demands accuracy of the highest level to score well. Slight misses left or right will invariably result in your ball coming to rest in a position that will make par a difficult score.

We see it as the hidden jewel of Lake Karrinyup. Its blend of magnificent par 3s and par 4s make it the ideal option for players (of all levels) who favour a fast 9 and a good time.

Note: Visiting golfers must be a guest of a Lake Karrinyup member, a member of one of their affiliated clubs with reciprocity or have gained permission to play directly from club management as an interstate or international visitor.

Wembley Golf Course

There is so much happening at Wembley. It’s a hive of activity filled with smiling individuals and fun-loving families. Women’s Golf Magazine thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our time spent there and has vowed to return.

The Wembley Golf Course is a purpose-built public golf facility that leads the nation in design and functionality to attract more than just golfers. The entire complex includes 36 holes of golf, a ‘State of the Art’ 80-bay automated driving range, Perth’s best mini golf experience, one of Australia’s biggest pro shops and WA’s only PGA Learning and Performance Centre. Ensure you come visit Wembley next time you’re in Perth!

The Vines Golf Club

Consistently rated as one of Australia’s favourite golf resorts, the Vines offers 36 holes across two of Perth's top golf courses. These equally challenging 18-hole golf courses are located in the gorgeous Swan Valley and feature lush bent grass greens, unique bunkering and a scenic natural layout.

Course architects, Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, skilfully and strategically used the stunning Swan Valley landscape to produce championship courses that command respect. It’s worth noting that The Ellenbrook and The Lakes layout have hosted some of the world's golfing greats!

Stay & Play - take it easy in the cosy comfort of the Novotel Vines Resort, set in unspoiled bushland, just 35 minutes drive from Perth. At dusk, relax on your balcony, glass in hand, as kangaroos arrive on the golf course. Such a perfect way to unwind after a long day on the green.

Rockingham Golf Club

Located in what is affectionately known as WA’s golf coast, the Rockingham Golf Club (approx. 45 minutes south of Perth) is a great place to play a game alongside some of Australia’s unique wildlife.

This facility prides itself on being as natural as can be achieved in a metropolitan area and looking at its magnificent bushland setting with towering Tuart trees, immaculate tees, fairways and of course the greens, you know they are doing something very right.

The Rockingham Golf Course offers many opportunities for women of all ages to discover the wonderful game of golf. This picturesque 18-hole golf course boasts a driving range, putting greens, friendly pro shop staff and a fully licensed clubhouse with superb restaurant quality meals.

Rottnest Island Public Golf Course

Here’s one of Perth’s best-kept secrets, even though golfers have been teeing off there since the '60s!  The course was built by a team of driven volunteers, and 60 years later the friendly public course is in its best shape yet.

Tucked away behind the settlement between Karma Resort and The Basin, Rottnest Island Public Golf Course combines a 9-hole golf course, putting green, bowling green, a licensed clubhouse and function space.
